Your argument would be valid if Apple allowed any other app marketplace on iOS. They force all apps to use their app store. That’s the definition of anticompetitive behavior. Apple wants to force everyone to use their app store and get a cut of all their transactions, that’s some corporate mafia extortion shit.
Epic sucks, but Apple is/was completely in the wrong there. Google is at least less guilty, as you can still install apps from outside the Google app store on android.
I’m guessing it impacted some people for there to be a Hacker News (a fairly respectable news outlet) article about it. I was just listening earlier today and didn’t have any ads. Same with my wife on her account (family plan).

Even if they do, don’t be a dumbass and have your phone on you and be completely covered and approach the device via analogue method (e.g. walking, bicycle without a serial, etc).
I was going to say, I thought open source 3D Printer designs/kits have been a thing for awhile. My friend just built his own last year using his original 3D printer to help in the process, lol

I wouldn’t be surprised if google/YouTube just bans all VPN IPs. They already make you sign in lately if your IP range has been “shadow banned.”
100% this. The guy was literally a consultant and a developer. It’d just be bad business for him to outright dismiss AI without having actual hands on experience with said product. Clients want that type of experience and knowledge when paying a business to give them advice and develop a product for them.
I mean, it’s the first prototype iteration of it, I’m sure there’ll be aesthetic improvements. Not to mention, this might be something some people would only use for specific situations where faster, more natural feeling conversation could be beneficial (e.g. meetings, presentations, meet and greets, etc) versus all day everyday. Lastly, even if used all day, every day, if you’re turned off from someone with a disability because they use a device like this, then honestly it’s helping that person avoid assholes.
Edit: I’m apparently wrong, this is the 2nd iteration. But the first iteration was even bulkier and more obvious, so it doesn’t really contradict my first point.
I didn’t say they were exonerating Apple. I was specifically pointing to their argument regarding Apple bearing the server costs. For macOS, sure, that’s valid. But for iOS, Apple is forcing those costs on themselves by keeping a closed system.
Also, Google is not locking down apps from outside the store. I still run the f-droid store just fine. Issuing a warning about installing unknown apps is hardly “locking it down.” For people not knowing what they’re doing, I think giving them a warning that APKs from third party sources could be dangerous is absolutely fine. That being said, Google could easily create or at least facilitate a APK signing service for third parties so that the warning wouldn’t appear for APKs that aren’t from shady sites.
I think I just poorly framed and articulated my response. No need to be so hostile and telling me to, “get it together.” This is supposed to be a casual discussion, not some heated argument.
