it’s a shame that I have to keep using youtube to get good linux content as I thought there would be plenty of it on peertube. nope, can’t find it.

bingo. the Mongol Empire lasted less than 90 years. A flash in the pan in terms of world history. Yeah he was great at conquering a massive amount of land mass but they sure as fuck were unable to hold it. and the 4 Khans after Genghis ruled for like a handful of years each. One of which only lasted a couple years.

the infuriating one is Capcom. after all these years, decades even, they STILL to this DAY do not understand PC games. they still have yet to figure out HOW to optimize their games for PC and would STILL keep using Denuvo even AFTER admitting that “yeah it slows our games down, yeah we remove it and then put it back”
Either it’s old as Japanese execs at capcom that refuse to understand gaming on the PC or they just don’t care. But it boggles my mind how Capcom kept using Denuvo while admitting it fucks their shit up.

yeah they were horrible, could barely run anything. I always remember the sticker on the front of it “you’ll never have to upgrade again!”
My dad would get deals on them because he would pay for like a years worth of internet service up front so we’d either get the emachines pc for dirt cheap or practically free. so depending on the deal that was being run we’d end up switching ISPs like every year. MSN, AOL, Prodigy, etc.

it’s also for the purpose of targeting ads. Even if you don’t have a reddit account the home page is still going to tailor the feed to subreddits you’ve visited in the past or your geo-location for example. this makes it easier for advertising.

I’ve seen this episode before…something something IE something something Netscape
in 98 they were taken to court because at one point you couldn’t even uninstall IE from your PC since, if I remember correctly, It was so tied into the file explorer it would break your system. they also made it difficult to download alternatives like Netscape.
I remember my Dad had a thing for “eMachines” PCs because A. they were cheap and B. most of the time they came preinstalled with Netscape as opposed to IE and he liked Netscape a lot better. Problem with this though is I liked to play X-Wing vs Tie Fighter and Jedi Knight online and the easiest way to do so was via Microsofts Internet Gaming Zone which ONLY worked on IE. and downloading/installing IE in the late 90s on a dial up connection took forever. and THEN once you did install it good luck uninstalling it.

depends. for fresh grad new hires I would say yes but said grads don’t know any better. mandatory weekly on calls, no dedicated workspaces (first come first serve desks), weekly recap meetings with god knows how many managers and team leads they have. But once you “pay your dues” so to speak at Amazon and you get senior status you pretty much dont’ do anything. This coming from a buddy of mine that worked there. Current amazon is pretty much riding on the backs of oblivious junior devs and LLMs/AI.

a few years ago I had a really stupid issue with my laptop. about twice a year, for whatever reason, Windows 11 decided my internal wifi card wasn’t worth existing and would just wipe it off the face of the earth. Just completely remove it, delete the drivers, everything. hard resetting the laptop didn’t work, physically unplugging and replugging the card back in didn’t work, manually installing the drivers didn’t work. the ONLY way Windows would accept the card again was on a fresh OS install. So twice a year, like clockwork, i’d have to do that except the last time I couldn’t because I needed an MS account. well I couldn’t get online. for whatever reason it wouldn’t allow me to connect to wifi and I didn’t have access to an eithernet connection. So I gave up and finally decided to give this Linux thing a try. Installed Mint within 15min.
The added bonus of installing Linux on the laptop was it suddenly brought my battery back to life. on Windows I MAYBE got 30min out of a full charge. On Linux with a WM like Niri it’s now a few hours. Linux also made me fall in love with the PC again. Now I’m on NixOS and i just love configuring my system or doing more dev work with ease thanks to nixshells.

yeah I’m not sure how it works in the US if you take the severance you forfeit unemployment but with the way the tech sector currently is I would be in favor of taking the unemployment instead because god damn is it rough out there.
Also not to knock Oracle employees but that place doesn’t have the most glowing reputation for “quality”. that right there might hinder their job search. Unless they go to Amazon. they’ll just hire anyone with a pulse as long as you agree to working on call.

oh Braid is so fucked up once you realize the story. At the end I was like “why the hell did I help this little prick?”

Dark Souls 3. NO ONE can convince me you’re the good guy in that situation. It’s a shit world that ISN’T worth saving and the people who all realize this are the only ones that can save it and refuse to. so your job is to force them to save it.
All you have to do is read the lore on Yhorm and then tell me you’re the good guy.

I worked with a guy that used to work at Oracle and he pretty much said the same thing. Essentially if you sneezed anywhere within a 10km radius of Oracles code base (and it didn’t matter which product) you ran the risk of it all crashing down. dudes spent more time talking about how to theoretically fix something as opposed to actually fixing it.

yeah this isn’t suspicious at all.
Congrats to you also! yeah it’s really the best thing I did in my life. It’s so much nicer now to wake up and not be hung over. I will admit though I did replace alcohol with coffee and I probably drink too much of it but I’d rather get a caffeine high and possible mid afternoon crash than being drunk all the time.
Drinking, A lot. Woke up on a park bench in the middle of winter with no jacket on. I could have died.
10 years sober today.

I subscribe to TWiT cause I grew up on The Screen Savers and Call for Help and regardless of what people think of him I still like Leo Laporte, the guy is my childhood. Anywho I listen to all their podcasts and I’ll sometimes listen to their weekly Mac one and it is absolutely insane the cult like behavior with these mac fans on this show. Oh they’ll complain about the monitors and everything else but will still continue to defend it all by the end. There is one woman on the show that just rants and raves constantly about the dumb decisions Apple makes but openly admits that she’ll continue to buy their products.
At least on the Windows podcast the one dude will go ham on Microsoft weekly and I feel is pretty much just on the podcast to make fun of them. Then you have the Linux podcast where those guys just make fun of everything and it’s honestly entertaining. Plus they have one guy who is in his 80s on there who is an absolute gem.

Canada: The Kids in the Hall.
But there are a few I really like. Orphan Black, Letterkenny, Shorzy, Littlest Hobo, SCTV, Fraggle Rock, Schitt’s Creek, Degrassi Junior High and Degrassi High (not the newer ones with Drake), The Red Green Show, Reboot, Transformers: Beast Wars (or as it was known here just “Beasties”) Street Cents, This Hour has 22 Minutes, Mr. Dressup…really hard to just pick one.

I’m more concerned that apparently 6 people read that and then not only A. understood it but B. agreed with it.

IF you like warhammer 40k or want to get into the lore (it’s god damn insanely deep and interesting) there are a few VERY good videos that are multiple hours long that pretty much come out on a weekly basis. https://www.youtube.com/@Luetin09 is my favourite. if I have nothing to do one a weekend afternoon i’ll just put his vids on while I do some dev work or play around with my pc configs. each video is easily 2+ hours. and it’s just lore.
I don’t even know how to play WH40k, I don’t own any of the minitures, but damn do I know all the lore because of his vids.
I use radio.garden every day. When I work I like listening to trance and EDM and there’s no better stations to listen to that stuff than random ones in Germany or Belgium.
I also like listening to Post-Hardcore music and Russian stations have that stuff in spades. really quality stuff even from bands I haven’t heard in years.
