  • Tesla model 3 does have mechanical door release mechanisms (at least for the front doors

It’s in the door pocket, under the rubber liner at the bottom of the pocket

People really need to read the owners manual for their cars, but also companies that make innovative changes to basic safety systems like door handles should make some effort to inform their customers how to bypass those things

Other things tesla fails to tell their customers, aside from in the owner’s manual, include that pressing and holding the park button activates emergency braking

The article was wrong that the electronic door latching prevents people outside helping those trapped in the car, the outside handle are mechanical, they will work unless the door is locked

I have definitely heard of children being killed by a car while waiting for a bus in a bus shelter several metres away from the road

I have read about cars smashing through walls of houses

I have read about a car used to kill the children of the driver in a lake well away from the road

Cars are not guaranteed to be on roads when they are killing people

  • America is not the only car centric culture. What is up with all the ‘America bad’ bullshit on Lemmy lately?

Also, I literally live next to a fully separated bike lane in an oil state…

Because unlike other car centric places, the US federal government is actively opposed to any improvement in bicycle or walking infrastructure, though some states are willing to defy the federal government

Add to that how the US federal government is opposed to renewable energy, opposed to protection of the environment, opposed to protection of threatened species, opposed to immigration, opposed to past immigration, opposed to assigned at birth gender nonconformity, opposed to non reproductive sexual preferences, opposed to education — especially of women

Your oil state is probably more responsive to people’s desire to ride a bike without being killed than the US, and yours is an oil state.

  • Canberra (the city, not the federal government) has been going pretty hard on urban infill for a while now, if we manage to get high enough population density then suburbs can become towns

Now we just need to convince Australians to have babies at better than replacement rate; I don’t think it’s possible to densify in a declining population

Canberra, Australia has ok bike to the airport. No bike parking at the airport, so if you’re seeing someone off you’re probably locking it to a sign or a fence. You’re in with cars for the last kilometre though as the airport doesn’t consider bikes, though the city does
