Only Office is a Russian thing. Euro Office takes all the open source parts of Only Offices, forks them and rewrites stuff only handled by binary blobs.
It’s a quite interesting project, freeing that half-open office suite.

Yes they are. That’s why you take only the open parts of it, fork and rewrite replace all the binary blobs. That’s why you do your own change management and ignore the Russians. Read up on how the new project actually works.

Because the Only Office source is more modern while Libre Offices’s source code now is around 35 years old. At least that was the reasoning in one of the articles I read.

Oooh, kinky.

Yep, I’m just annoyed by lazy headlines.

What really bugs me about it: The first step from “how to ungoogle your phone” is “go, give money to Google” by buying their hardware.
What chores? Everything that has to do with miniaturization. They’d have sub-millimeter fingers. Repairing that Iphone? The screw that I can’t even fucking see would be huge for them. Or as neurosurgeons, or or or
Biggest productivity win would be teams between humans, fairies and pixies. Each can do tasks according to his strength and size.
But wait. Maybe fairies are around, and they’re all locked up in sweat shops in Bangladesh or China producing new stuff to flood our markets…

I do think software piracy also was a large success factor. When I was 13 there was one major spot in my city where consoles and computers were sold (within a department store!), and people where “swapping” games even before they bought the hardware. I remember at least one of the store clerks having a small side business providing access to disks and tapes you could copy - right on the machines that were shown in store.
And I learned how to copy the C64’s basic rom to ram and mod small things even before I had the machine myself.
All the kids were gathering round the computers, the consoles were less attractive.
When I got my own C64 in 1983, my first game was Fort Apocalypse. It was not an original. You needed a boom box with dual tape decks to copy these.
Libre is rooted a bit in 90s design, with an OO object model designed to roughly mirror Microsoft 's COM/DCOM. I’m sure Libre has seen a lot of modernization - and I want that codebase to survive. But it’s also nice to have a second option, now.
