Because the generator runs at its ideal RPM all the time, it can burn the fuel much more efficiently (and thus is slightly cleaner too). It’s the same as diesel-electric locomotives, which is like, all of the locomotives. So, it fixes a little tiny bit. Not enough, but every little bit helps.

I would guess they face forward because they want it to blow into the street during clean out rather than onto the sidewalk? Alternately, if they have to pull across the street, maybe they don’t want the main hose to kink if pulled sideways.
What I really don’t understand is why they don’t make one of the smaller side hose taps the same size as the front pumper tap. You could have an adapter already on it too, so you can connect either size hose just as quickly. Nvm, I did some research and this is already a thing, often with 45 degree hydrants called the “Chicago Standard” (not enough, IM^(uneducated)O).

On the flip side, if you still need a power cable anyway, it’s usually way cheaper to bundle the media (and optionally control/network) signals into the same cable than using wireless. (Sidenote: Honestly it’s kinda weird to me that we haven’t seen hardly any of this in consumer spaces. The newer USB-C revisions could easily supply power, display, audio, and network to the average TV over one cable.)
Now, with true wireless power (I’m thinking of this video in particular), that proposition can change dramatically.
We do have them during construction, and if you look closely you can often see where they used to be, but they’re rarely kept in place after construction. Weird that they go to the extra work of removing them instead of just leaving them blocked with jersey barriers.
