Then I doubt they are running the mentioned most accurate, two-week-long physics solvers at this stage either. You only do that when you need accuracy. A quick simulation doesn’t take long.

I’m generally the same way. If I made a contribution, there is either a bug that is annoying the shit out of me, or it’s actually preventing progress at my job somehow. Which means I pretty much only make drive-by contributions.
That said, there is a benefit to this from a human perspective. The drive-by fixes from people like me should improve over time as we do more of them. The same can not be said about a bot.

This is the justification for phasing them out and (presumably) not renewing the contract. Happens all the time. Usually with less angry internet posts and more quiet paper pushing.
It’s one of the reasons DoD things can be expensive. DoD contractors aren’t allowed to use the cheap Chinese supplier, for example.

These are a massive liability every storm. You have to winch them down and get them into a blisteringly massive hangar that can hold them. Then get them set back up after. Every. Single. Storm.
