  • I keep my phone mounted on the air vent right in front of me, and I can say, “Siri, message my wife blah blah blah” she’ll read it back, and I’ll tell her to send it. It’s not 100% safe, but it’s way safer than holding the phone and typing it out. Nothing in a car is 100% safe, people take their eyes off the road to adjust the heat & a/c controls or turn the radio. My point is that text-to-speech is multitudes safer than holding the phone. And trust me, my job has me on the road all day. I pass plenty of people on the interstate with their heads down into their laps for stretches at 80 mph.

I like the interface more than the Lemmy interface, but it also has a number of cool features that Lemmy doesn’t have. And the update schedule is crazy good. PieFed 1.5 has only been out about 3 weeks, and the dev just released 1.6 today with more features, updates, and fixes.

Not to mention that there is some… questionable… behavior by the Lemmy devs. While the PieFed dev may not be perfect, he doesn’t have the baggage the Lemmy devs do, and I feel better using the PieFed software. It all connects to the same stuff.

Since your Lemmy account is only 3 days old, I would recommend switching over to PieFed. It’s a much nicer experience and federates with all the same servers that Lemmy does, so you’re seeing the same posts but in a better way. You’re on lemmy.zip, and the same devs run piefed.zip.

With a little curation of your community subscriptions, you can get a very similar experience to Reddit but better.

  • I used Apollo for Reddit on my phone. The dev was very active in the subreddit, and using Apollo truly felt like being a member of a club. When they shut down the API access, Christian, the dev, tried to negotiate with them to keep the app alive. Not only was Reddit not negotiating in good faith, but they actively lied about the interactions. Unfortunately for them, Christian produced the receipts that made them look like idiots. (But they apparently couldn’t care less.) I went looking for alternatives and found Lemmy. Voyager is “heavily inspired” by Apollo (which means it’s almost a carbon copy), and scratches the itch. Now, with PieFed, I’m even more happy here.
