This is how Discord works.
I’ve two separate friends who lost access to their accounts. One lost it via hacking or social engineering, and the other lost access because their mail service shut down. Both long time users, with the subscription bullshit.
Both struggled with support, neither got their accounts back. Both made new accounts and continued paying the subscription. Absolutely bonkers.
Don’t know if they do LLMs but they’ve had machine learning features for years. They added the ability to extract subjects from images and turning them into stickers back in 2023.
Don’t know if I’d call that an intention of the machine but rather the creator. Hate to be that kind of person but it’s similar to the whole thing of “guns don’t kill, people do.”
LLMs aren’t people. They’re not self-aware and don’t have any inner complexities like say, a dog, or a sheep has. There’s no drive or motivation. It’s just maths.
If you tie someone to a train track, and a train comes along killing them, it’s not like the train or the track intended to kill the person. That was the intent of you, who “programmed” the scenario.
Similar to guns, strict control is what will be needed to fix these kinds of things. Megalomaniac billionaires who see people as nothing but numbers running amok with narcissistic manipulator systems isn’t a recipe for anything good.
I don’t think most companies will find much value in that though. I know that none of the infrastructure I work with uses heavy calculations, and if we tried to jam it in, we’d be making solutions looking for problems.
An email server doesn’t need a GPU, neither does a file server, or a website, or an e-commerce platform.
Suppose they could rent it out as supercomputers but I don’t think the return on cost is going to be that good.

I’m so glad I didn’t go into games development. I make boring old business software and it’s great.

Apple isn’t an advertising company so it feels like they’d be more up to not selling your data and such. But honestly I don’t really trust it.
I went from Android to iOS purely because I was sick of devices being supported for a year or two, when Apple supports their phones with mainline updates for six+. I feel like the overall user experience is better, it’s smoother, more polished, and I can do what I need to do rather than struggle with something half-baked.
My work phone is a Pixel 6, and I absolutely hate using it. Google hasn’t worked on the user experience even a little.
Would still rather a janky Linux phone that I actually own than anything else.
Facebook had lobbied so that the age verification is handled by the device rather than the application. The applications then need to check against this device API and conform accordingly.
This ends up cheaper for Facebook and opens up for future legislation to embed similar shit in the OS for companies to exploit.
Does anyone genuinely believe that it was true e2ee? It’s Facebook. There is NO WAY they didn’t have a man-in-the-middle backdoor.
If you care about encryption I’d recommend Ente. They have guides for migrating from Google Photos.
I was initially just doing local backups but I decided I wanted something offsite and Ente has been great.
There’s also Immich which is very similar to Google Photos in terms of features, and NextCloud which is a whole cloud suite. These aren’t encrypted by default though so if you use a cloud provider they could realistically also scan through your photos.

Users should’ve gone to mastodon to begin with. Why the fuck would they leave a monolithic corpo platform for another monolithic corpo platform? It’s stupid.
This literally already happened here in Sweden. A guy got assaulted by masked police in the middle of the night because an American company had gone through photos in his Yahoo mail and flagged his 30 year old boyfriend as possible CSAM.
People like to think that Sweden is progressive etc. and I’d rebut it with this. If it can happen here, it could happen anywhere.

Only it wasn’t CSAM, the photos depicted the man’s 30 year old twinky boyfriend.
No restitution. No police were punished for assaulting a suspect proved innocent. The man and his boyfriend both were humiliated.
I’ve no mixed feelings about it. Spying through private data is entirely unforgivable. There are plenty of pedos out there who get caught and nothing happens anyway. They don’t need to violate innocent people’s privacy to do their job.
Like if the ends justify the means you can end all suffering in the world by just nuking everything. All problems solved.
