  • The effects of lead poisoning were already very well known, 8 people died of lead poisoning at DuPont during the development and Midgely himself suffered the effects of lead poisoning after “proving” his compound was safe in a public demonstration.

He absolutely knew there would have been widescale negative health effects if they continued to push the product on the market. He also knew about widely available alternative “anti-knocking” agents they could have used but they were unable to be patented and so there was no profit.

He is absolutely a case of someone who simply did not care about the consequences of his work beyond what profit could be extracted.

CFCs are a slightly different issue because no one could have reasonably anticipate their effects on the atmosphere and he was long dead before those effects were starting to be felt.

I don’t believe he would have stopped developing them even if he did know however.

The universe got the last laugh however after he became entangled in self made contraption to help him after he developed polio, suffocating him.

  • Basic metalworking needs a stick welder (£50-150), angle grinder (£30-80), mask (£20-100), other safety gear (£20-100), assorted hand tools (£20-200) and a dry workspace with light, power and ventilation.

You can setup a simple workspace in any room with some basic protection for your fixtures and fittings. Or you can get popup workshop tents you can put in your garden.

You can get all your metal precut and drilled, even folded in a brake when you order it and get it delivered to save costs on drills and saws.

There’s always lots of cheap tools and things around if you look at online listings locally especially since it skews older as a hobby so lots of house clearances selling good quality tools.

This is exactly how I started!

  • To a certain degree, I’m a big fan of Hip Hop and Reggae and both genres are inescapably homophobic and misogynistic but I can look past most of the less than savoury parts, there’s also a lot of glorifying violence in a lot of the music (though once you dig past a lot of the gangsta stuff it’s much less common) but it doesn’t bother me.

I can’t listen to Afrika Bambaataa anymore though since the child sexual assault cases came to light, same goes for a lot of acts.

I also can’t support anyone who is actively oppressing others like Jim Rowling or Graham Linehan despite how much I may have previously enjoyed their work.
