One thing that seemingly doesn’t rely on the internet is Iran’s masterful ability to make the American bullies look criminally stupid. It’s already hugely impressive, imagine what they could do with a bit of WiFi.

Approximately 0.1 years out of 3 billion years, truly a crisis. Precisely what people occupied themselves with for 3 billion years before the internet existed we may never know. Some claim they spent quite considerable time as single cell organisms, then multicellular aquatic organisms, until the species reached it’s apogee, a flabby orange real estate pedo fraudster.

Those are some good examples, more of that please. Most of the lithium powered devices I’m using currently are power tools and they are exclusively repackaged 18650 and 21700 cells. It’s really not much of a technical challenge to make these things standardised but if there is no regulatory pressure it’s easy money for the OEMs and more toxic waste for us.

I was amazed by the transformation in Amsterdam when I visited last summer. I’ve been visiting Netherlands for 40 years and always admired their cycling culture but lately they seemed to have almost eliminated cars from the city. As a result it is incredibly quiet, serene and there is no vehicle soot on the buildings, as is the case in London. I could often choose among many different modes of alternative transport in any given location.

The English solution to this problem is ever more stringent penalties on the driver (e.g. ULEZ) which may be profitable but they have been ineffective at reducing the volume of vehicular traffic, pollution, accidents, ad nauseum. We pay a huge price for car culture.

It’s a similar problem to lead acid batteries. 2V cells are arranged in a way that will deliver 12V at sufficient current for a particular application. However the solution we have landed on is completely different to li-ion because you can take any suitably sized car battery from one brand of vehicle and put it in another. The reason for that is the interface is common to virtually all cars. This technology pre-dates enshitification. There is no good reason to tie any battery to any device other than it helps the shareholders. They are busy inserting barriers to re-use and modularity everywhere in technology, particularly software.

Battery interfaces. We have a huge variety of batteries for a huge variety of devices. However, when you open the proprietary shell of these batteries what you often find inside is standardized 18650 cells. They have been playing us for absolute fools.

On Mondays my daughter visits and she noticed how many cats there are in my street so she started bringing cat treats. Now I have a rotation of about eight cats that regularly greet me as I leave or arrive. They know my car and the sound of the front door. It’s added a surprising amount of joy to my life.

Holy shit, reading these symptoms feels like burnout is very common. I’ve heard people talking about autistic burnout with people in their 30-40s. I think men in particular can lose their shit in this decade and it’s often referred to as a midlife crisis but is it a biological thing or is the workplace a hostile space?

I want to ban everything conservatives and corporations love. All drugs legal except alcohol, ban billionaires, ban lobbying, keep doing that until their heads explode.

We know that social media is designed to be addictive and needs to be regulated the same way any addictive or dangerous substance or activity should be. Harm reduction and education is the best way in general.

It would not be surprising if found to be true. Difficult to see how the current business model operates at a profit. Their long term goal is the usual loss leader model until a monopoly is achieved and then slug us with ads, sell all the data, hike the price, etc. Sickening to watch them cosy up to fascists. They are probably supplying any and all the agencies with intelligence scraped from their user base. If Facebook were a person they would be a psychopath.

Who would have thought that populating walled gardens and other enshitified services is a terrible idea?

One of the fundamental problems is that our leadership is becoming increasingly illiterate in technology. In order to leverage the economies of scale for large systems we need to either content ourselves with enshitified corporate solutions or enable collectivised approaches. Wikipedia is an excellent example of this, more of that please.
