  • Yeah, no, I totally get it. It just blows that people just bends over like this for all the corpo bullshit, users, devs and other companies alike. I have a small business with my wife, and I try to run as much as humanly possible on open source software. I donate to the platforms we use, and for almost 3 years we’ve gotten away with not giving any money to Microsoft, Google, Amazon, Apple or any of the other tech giants. It is a Titanic task to keep everything running, for sure, but absolutely worth it. My point is that, if we can do it being so small and barely profitable, I can’t imagine larger companies having an issue with moving away from these predatory practices. Then again, I’m not fully aware of what other businesses might require that we can live without comfortably.

  • Yeah, led like sheep by the illusion of convenience. It is sad.

I’ve been reading all over the place how people are finally becoming more aware of the lack of privacy, but I scratched that as me always seeing this because I mostly interact in privacy and security related environments.

However, the least likely person I know to be concerned about these factors is my brother, as he’s all about convenience and ‘glamour’. Well, he called me on Sunday to ask me if I suggested that he flashed “that operating system you use on your phone” (GrapheneOS) on his device, and asked if I knew what proton was 🤣 only to mention that he had found that and was in the process of dropping gmail. Imagine my surprise when this guy is calling for this.

What I’m trying to say is that, if my brother is suddenly concerned about his digital privacy and security, I am certain 50% of Normie’s out there are as well, or will be pretty soon.

I genuinely believe that we’re living in a pivotal moment in digital philosophy across all realms, people are finally waking up from the convenience slumber, and my hope is that this will help shift the discourse all over the place, and we can all expect more of the people in our environments start asking questions about how to fly under the radar.

  • That’s one of the problems. Why are you mixing people in with companies? The largest OS distributors already have this in place, those ‘companies’ already have this in place. Who do you think has been lobbying for this to be pushed? All of those giants benefit from this by pushing undue strain on small developers, which in turn tightens their grip on the users. Yeah, all the fucking politicians are to blame, as are all those companies as well. I’d this will cause projects to just remove access from those jurisdictions, good. Maybe people in those areas will help vote out the same politicians that bent over for a few bucks for this (unlikely though). Open your eyes, it’s not politicians against tech, it’s the powerful against us. I’m glad GrapheneOS decided to just not comply. And there are way more open projects taking the same stand. There’s still brave people out here.

So, I stand by what I said. I made my choice, you also get to make yours.

  • ‘Even Linux’ you say? Absolutely wrong. Linux is the kernel, and this is what is allowing some Linux distros to flip the finger at this bullshit laws. As for android, yeah, ‘tech-giant’ controlled android OSs will have to comply, but alternatives like GrapheneOS won’t, and most likely will not follow this rule. We have options, people that don’t want to use them are welcome to keep doing as they’re told. While I get that the options are ‘comply or leave this market’ for OS developers, whether small groups of nerds or trillion dollars behemoths, its still a choice, Apple made theirs.

  • That’s not all they do. They sell security, according to them. If they can’t secure their own shit, how are they going to secure yours? That’s my point. Like you, I self host everything, and I’m well aware that some things are close to impossible to keep private, but giving more of your information to companies that swear they can keep you secure, knowing that there’s a 90%+ chance they will just be another company selling your data while charging you monthly for a completely useless ‘service’ swearing what they do is the complete opposite is exactly why the world is so fucked right now. People need to start doing research or pay the consequences. But it’s worse than that. Because so many fucking idiots resort to shit companies like this one (can’t be bothered to let go of some convenience) the ones that really put some effort into trying to make things better get hit with all this shit, because we are way less than the normies. And yeah, it’s a fucking rant, the more this shit happens the less I respect fucking normies. This has led me to a life where only my immediate family matter now, and maybe a few friends. Everyone else, they can drown in all the crap they choose to put up with for a bit more temporary convenience in their current life, while willfully avoiding looking at the reality of where this is taking all of us. We the few are being royally fucked because the many just won’t move. And I’m not naive enough to believe this is not the way of this world, it is, but I refuse to participate as much as possible. I have enough money tk last me the rest of my life, don’t have to worry about anything, so I have no use for any of what is being sold out there. House is completely paid for, I’m basically removed entirely from my country’s financial system, keep 2 international credit cards from another country for when I travel, and use cash as much as possible. This rant comes from how tired I am of just seeing people complaining about all that is happening while refusing to accept responsibility for enabling this kind of crap. You don’t want your data out there? Easy, research the companies and brands you use, and if they don’t match your philosophy, fucking drop them. ‘Windows is so fucked up, now I have to buy a new expensive laptop for windows 11’. In what sane mind does that make any sense? No, the logical path is, and will always be, ‘windows is so fucked up, so fuck Microsoft, they will never see my money again’.

Now that I’ve let it all out, pissed off a shitload of people, let the fucking hate begin, see if I give a fuck.
